How I brought 70% of a customer’s keywords to page one of Google

I take a lot of pride in the SEO work I do, and really enjoy the creative thought process that goes along with it. The whole goal is to overtake the competition, and get increased search engine ranking positions.

In just one month, I helped Mind River Marketing get to page one of Google for 70% of our targeted keywords.

Shown below are some of the keywords we started working on, with their original positions tracked from February through May. Although I only did one month’s worth of work, the rankings have sustained, and continue to rise. Most impressive though, is the dramatic increases in positions for some terms, such as “credit trigger leads” which began on page twenty, and ended up on page one. Notice that we also achieved a coveted “double listing” for the term “Debt settlement direct mail” which means there are two different links for the website on page one of Google.

How did I do that?

Well, I can’t reveal every method, but as any good SEO will tell you it begins with keyword analysis and spying on the competition. Once you have a good understanding of what you’re up against, or find some keywords that have little competition, you can sieze the reigns and start employing other tactics to rank for those keywords.

In the past, I used a lot of linkwheels to build these “foundations” or hubs surrounding my focus site. That no longer works very well, so you have to get a little more intricate. I build massive, interconnected networks of articles, multimedia, podcasts, and spread content in a wide variety of formats across the web. I link them all together in randomized ways, so it seems like a natural progression in the eyes of Google.

If that sounds complicated, it is. At first. Once you have the right tools, and a solid blueprint to follow it becomes second nature. Of course, the game is always changing, and what I have described is but one technique that I use in SEO campaigns.

Here’s a diagram that shows what I do:

As you can see, I try to build a lot of major hubs around my “money” site. Those hubs might be web 2.0 blogs, youtube videos, article sites, podcast directories, forum topics, and many other types of information outlets. Each of these outlets gets pinged and I add social bookmarks at random to further boost their credibility. All of this combined leads to a powerful network of sites, full of relevant content, that drive targeted traffic to your site.
